It’s a well known fact that Sausages hate the rain! We’ve lost count of the amount of times we’ve heard our owners say they have given up when it’s raining outside and they ‘accept’ their pups will go to the toilet in the house.
Mr Coot has taken one look at the rain this morning and walked backwards in order to escape the rain!
It’s so frustrating but what can be done to break this curse ?
There are a few things that you can do. But it starts with early socialisation with the breeder. Here at Coots from approximately 4 weeks old we expose our pups to water. Not to wash them but to desensitise them for this very reason. We use a shower attachment and spray water over them every week. Honestly, they don’t mind at such a young age and definitely by the time they leave us between 8 and 12 weeks they have been broken by the Sausage Water Curse! BUT this only works if you,
their new pawrents keep up the good work. Walking in the rain can be made more enjoyable for your pup if he/she has a rain proof coat. It’s simple really, do we enjoy walking if we get wet and cold? Sausages are intelligent. They know what they like and what they don’t, this is learnt very quickly in life. So wrap them up a little and find a quality suitable coat. Second tip, be consistent! ( that word again) don’t let them dictate when it rains and insist on them going outside to the toilet. We are sorry to say but this means you too! Go out and make sure they go to the toilet, reward them when they do and play games as you normally would on a dry day. Never did we see a rusty sausage it may be raining but still walk and still go outside.

Birth go outside on a rainy day is a battle but we have to practice what we preach which means on days like today YEP Mommy Coots looks like a drowned rat all day
