Why We Only Breed Standard Patterns and Colours
At Coots at Eversden, we take immense pride in being an FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale) and KC (Kennel Club) International Show breeder dedicated to ethical and responsible practices. Our primary mission is to preserve and improve the Dachshund breed, a breed that we believe is under threat due to the increasing prevalence of non-standard colours and patterns introduced to satisfy fashion trends and fleeting fads.
Preserving the True Dachshund
We firmly believe that the original Dachshund breed standard is something to be cherished, protected, and nurtured. Deviating from these standards can undermine the integrity of the breed, and if we continue down this path, the Dachshund as we know and love it may eventually disappear.
At Coots at Eversden, we have proudly produced World and European Champions, all of whom adhere to the breed’s established standards. We see no reason to compromise by breeding Dachshunds with colours or patterns that fall outside of these standards. Such deviations are often the result of genetic mutations, like dilute colours, or crossbreeding with other dog breeds at some point in their lineage. Neither of these practices aligns with our philosophy or commitment to breed excellence.
Commitment to Healthy and Balanced Dachshunds
We also do not support exaggerated features, such as excessively short legs or overly long backs, which can lead to health problems and diminish the breed’s quality of life. Instead, we strive to produce Dachshunds that represent the very best of the breed. Our breeding philosophy is centred on selecting and nurturing the finest traits, and our track record speaks for itself—each new generation at Coots at Eversden is exceptional, with consistent wins and accolades that reflect our commitment to excellence.
“Our aim is simple. We want to produce the perfect Dachshund.”
A dog that embodies all the qualities that make this breed so special—intelligence, agility, loyalty, and a distinctive appearance—all while maintaining the standards set forth by the FCI.
What Are the Correct Breed Standards?
According to the FCI, the following colours and patterns are considered standard for Dachshunds:
- Red
- Black and Tan
- Chocolate (Brown) and Tan
- Dapple/Merle in the colours listed above
- Brindle
Any other colour or pattern, such as Cream, Piebald, Total White, Total Black, Blue, or Isabella, is not recognised by the breed standard and therefore will not be issued with a pedigree.
This is a true representation of what a Dachshund should look like.
