Why Adopting an Older Dachshund Might Be the Best Decision You Ever Make
Helping one of our older Dachshunds begin their next chapter is something we do with great care. These dogs have shared our daily lives, often been part of our show hopes, and each one holds a special place in our hearts. Letting them go is never easy—but sometimes we know they’re ready for more. A life where they’re not one of many, but the centre of someone’s world. A home where they can be truly cherished, with their own people and their own sofa.
At Coots At Eversden, we’re a professional show kennel, and everything we do is with the goal of raising happy, confident, well-structured Dachshunds. When we have a new litter, we may decide to keep all of the puppies for a while so we can watch how each one develops. The show world asks a lot from a dog, and we want to be sure any dog we put forward genuinely enjoys the role. You can’t always tell at 12 weeks who will flourish in that environment, so we give them time to grow and reveal who they really are.
Sometimes, one of our Dachshunds gently shows us that the show life isn’t quite for them. And when that happens, we begin the process of finding them a new family—one that will give them all the love and attention they deserve.
Puppies Aren’t for Everyone—and That’s Perfectly Fine
For some people, a puppy isn’t the right fit. Whether it’s a matter of time, lifestyle, or simply preference, a more mature dog can feel like the better choice. Our older Dachshunds are past their early development stages and have grown into their personalities. They’ve experienced life in a busy, structured home and are already used to routines, people, and other dogs.
This means we know them well—and that allows us to match them carefully with the right new family.
We Think Like the Dog
When it’s time for one of our Dachshunds to move on to a family of their own, we always ask ourselves: “If I were this dog, what would I want?” We imagine the right setting, the right pace of life, and the kind of people that the dog would bond with. Every dog is different, so every transition is thoughtfully considered.
Some of our Dachshunds would thrive in a home with children. Others are more settled with quiet companionship. Some enjoy the company of other dogs, while others are happiest being the only one. Whatever their personality, we aim to find a family that suits them just right.
Plenty of Love to Give
Our mature Dachshunds may be a little older than puppies, but they’re still full of life, energy, and affection. They’ve been raised with consistency and care, and they’re ready to form a strong bond with someone new.
Every Dachshund we place in a new home comes with an International Pedigree, is fully vaccinated, and has completed our socialisation programme. They’re well-rounded, confident, and prepared to start this exciting next stage in life.
Could One of Them Be Waiting for You?
From time to time, we have mature Dachshunds looking for the perfect family to call their own. If you’re considering welcoming an older dog into your life, we’d love to help you find the right match.
Visit our website to meet the Dachshunds we currently have available for adoption, or reach out to us directly via WhatsApp for a quick chat about who’s ready now and what kind of home they’re looking for.
We’re always happy to talk you through who’s available, their personality, and whether they could be a good fit for your lifestyle. Placing one of our Dachshunds into a new home is never rushed—but when the right match comes along, it’s a truly special moment for everyone involved.
