How to Help Your Dachshund Through a False Pregnancy

False pregnancies are a common experience for many female dogs, especially dachshunds. It can be worrying for owners when their girl starts behaving as if she is expecting puppies, even though she is not actually pregnant. The good news is that, in most cases, this is completely normal and does not require any treatment. However, it’s important to understand the signs and know when a little extra help may be needed.

Understanding False Pregnancy

A false pregnancy, also known as a phantom pregnancy, happens when a female dog’s body acts as if she is pregnant, even though she is not. This usually occurs around six weeks after her last season and is caused by hormonal changes. Her body produces the same hormones that would be present if she were carrying a litter, leading to physical and behavioural changes.

Common signs include:

  • Swollen mammary glands
  • Nesting behaviour
  • Carrying toys as if they were puppies
  • Reduced appetite or fussiness with food
  • Mild lethargy
  • Restlessness or increased clinginess

Some girls go through a false pregnancy without any noticeable changes, while others may show clear signs. Every dog is different, and the severity can vary each time it happens.

When to Take Action

In most cases, no treatment is necessary. If your girl is comfortable and her behaviour is not significantly affected, the best thing to do is let it pass naturally. The symptoms usually resolve within a few weeks as her hormone levels return to normal.

However, if she is experiencing discomfort, there are things you can do to help:

  • Limit Nesting Behaviour – If she gathers toys and treats them like puppies, gently remove them to discourage the behaviour. This can help her settle down more quickly.
  • Avoid Overstimulation of the Mammary Glands – Some girls will produce milk, and while it may be tempting to check or express it, this can actually encourage more milk production. It is best to leave it alone unless there are signs of discomfort.
  • Distraction and Exercise – Keeping her active and engaged can help distract her from the false pregnancy. Short walks, playtime, and training exercises are all good ways to keep her occupied.

When to Seek Veterinary Advice

If your girl is experiencing more severe symptoms or appears to be in distress, a visit to the vet may be needed. Signs that she might need extra help include:

  • Excessive lactation, which can become uncomfortable or lead to infection
  • Severe behavioural changes such as aggression, anxiety, or depression
  • Prolonged symptoms lasting more than a few weeks

In cases where lactation is causing discomfort, medications are available to help reduce milk production. Your vet will be able to advise you on the best course of action if necessary.

Preventing Future False Pregnancies

If your Sausage experiences frequent or severe false pregnancies, spaying is the only way to prevent them long-term. However, we don’t recommend spaying until she is at least two years old, and ideally, even later. Giving her body time to fully develop before spaying can support her overall health and well-being in the long run. If you’re unsure whether spaying is the right option for your girl, your vet can help talk you through the pros and cons, so you can make the best decision for her.

Supporting Your Girl Through a False Pregnancy

False pregnancies can be confusing, both for dachshunds and their families. Understanding what is happening and knowing it is a natural process can make managing it easier. In most cases, a little patience and gentle encouragement are all that is needed until it passes. Keeping an eye on her behaviour and comfort levels will help ensure she stays happy and healthy throughout the process.
